Carbarn Track Access Project Milestone

We are pleased to announce that a huge milestone has been reached in the construction of track access to our new Tyler Carbarn!

Following the relaying of the curve connecting the Lindsay Richardson Carbarn to the main line and final adjustments to the points here and to the northern road of the Don and Laurie Tyler Carbarn fan, Ray Blackmore and the Midweek Team were able to move the first tram into the Tyler Carbarn, Melbourne W2 441 in May. 

The tram was moved from the Richardson Carbarn fan onto the main line, and then into the northern road of the Tyler Carbarn. 441 had previously been stored for some time outside covered by a tarpaulin. With 441 not being in operational condition, the Midweek Team made use of the Telehandler as motive power to shunt 441 into the new Carbarn. Trackwork is now progressing on the southern road of the Tyler Carbarn.

With screeding of the road-base between the roads in the Tyler Carbarn progressing in June, the Society’s two Art Trams SW5 729 and 749 also joined 441 on the northern road at the start of July. 729 and 749 will undergo restoration in the future back to operational condition, providing some colourful variety to our operational fleet.

Flashing has been completed on the 20-foot transportable building at the western end of the Tyler Carbarn, with doors now installed to provide access to the Carbarn. An internal dividing wall has also been constructed, and electrical power has been connected.

The new Carbarn will be able to hold nine bogie trams once fully complete.
