Melbourne Trams SW5 729 And SW5 749 Arrive At PETS

Wednesday the 6th of March saw the delivery of 2 ex Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Borad (M&MTB) SW5 class trams. These 2 trams being some of the last of the of W series trams, stored at the former Victorian Railway's Newport Workshops.

Between 1978 and 1993 a program ran in Melbourne known as 'Transporting Art.' This saw a number of Melbourne trams painted in various special liveries, with the majority of them being painted by artists.

A couple of trams though were selected to be painted by tramway crews at Preston Workshops, with No's 729 and 749 being 2 of those cars.

SW5's 729 and 749 will soon be examined, before any repairs/modifications take place. This includes having parts replaced that have been lost, stolen or damaged during their long years of storage.

This process will take time....but once in service, they will bring a different look to our tramway, with their special liveries.
